First Aid Training vs. BLS Classes: What's the Difference?

First aid courses teach participants how to respond to injuries and sudden illnesses, while BLS focuses on recognizing life-threatening emergencies, performing CPR, and using an AED.Because first aid is not part of BLS training, the two courses should not be treated as interchangeable.
We offer both types of training at KT Global CPR, with AHA and ARC options for first aid and BLS. This guide breaks down the differences between the two and explains what to consider when choosing a course, starting with the requirements you need to meet.
First Aid Training Vs. Bls Classes: The Main Differences
The differences become clearer when you look at what each course covers and who it is designed for. The specific requirements can vary by course, so it is important to check the course details before registering.
Here’s how the two compare:
Feature | First Aid Training | BLS Classes |
Course options | AHA Heartsaver First Aid; ARC First Aid | AHA BLS; ARC BLS |
Typical audience | General public, including people with little or no medical training who need first aid training for job, regulatory, or licensing requirements | Healthcare professionals, trained first responders, and people enrolled in healthcare training programs |
Main focus | Recognizing common first aid emergencies and responding with first aid skills | Recognizing life-threatening emergencies, performing high-quality CPR, and using an AED |
Format | Classroom or blended learning, depending on the course | Classroom or blended learning, depending on the course |
Completion credential | Course completion card, depending on the selected course | BLS course completion eCard |
The two types of training can therefore lead to different course requirements, even though both involve responding to emergencies. If a workplace, school, or other organization specifies BLS or first aid, check that requirement before choosing a course.
What Does First Aid Training Cover?
AHA Heartsaver First Aid teaches people with little or no medical training how to recognize and respond to common first-aid emergencies. Depending on the course, training can cover medical emergencies, injuries, environmental emergencies, choking, and other situations that may require immediate assistance.
At KT Global CPR, we also offer ARC First Aid for the general public. The course covers topics such as wound care, choking, burns, and sudden illnesses. Check the course details before registering, as the topics and requirements can vary by course.
People seeking CPR and AED instruction can also review AHA Heartsaver CPR/AED and ARC CPR/AED .
What Do Bls Classes Cover?
BLS training covers the skills used to respond to life-threatening emergencies. Participants learn how to recognize an emergency, perform high-quality CPR, give effective breaths or ventilations, and use an AED.
The course also covers relief of foreign-body airway obstruction for adults, children, and infants, along with working effectively as part of a multirescuer team. These skills are practiced as part of the BLS training rather than covering the wider range of injuries and illnesses addressed in first aid courses.
Which Training Option Fits Your Needs?
The right training option can depend on whether you are taking the course for the first time, renewing an existing certification, or completing your training through a blended format.
Initial BLS Training
If this is your first BLS course, or your previous certification expired more than 90 days ago, you can take an initial BLS course. We provide initial options for both AHA BLS and ARC BLS.
BLS Certification Renewal
If you already hold a BLS certification and are eligible for renewal, we have separate renewal options for both AHA BLS and ARC BLS.
Blended and In-Person Training
We offer blended training that combines online coursework with an in-person skills session. ARC BLS is also available as a fully in-person course, giving you a choice of training formats.
Does BLS Include First Aid?
No. BLS and first aid are separate types of training. BLS focuses on life-threatening emergencies and resuscitation skills, while first aid covers a broader range of injuries and medical emergencies.
Although the two can involve some of the same emergency-response principles, completing one does not mean you have completed the other. If you need both certifications, they should be taken as separate courses unless a specific course states that both are included.
Find The Right Training Option
The best place to start is with the requirements you need to meet. At KT Global CPR, we offer training for different needs, from General Public Courses in first aid and CPR/AED to Healthcare Professional Courses in BLS and other advanced training. We also offer Certification Renewal options for eligible courses, along with blended and on-site training.
If you are not sure which course you need, start by checking the requirement you need to meet and then compare it with the course details. You can also read our guide to choosing a first aid course and qualified CPR instructor for more questions to consider before registering.
